A locomotive and a "slug" moves a sorted line of cars from the hump yard to the departure yard, to be assembled into train.  A slug is a modified locomotive that has no diesel engine, but gets electric power for its wheels from the attached locomotive.  Conventional locomotives use their own diesel engine to generate electric power that drives electric motors attached to each of the axles.
